In May 2024, a significant operation targeted the Waka TV pirate streaming service in the Western Cape, leading to the arrest of a key suspect. This individual was charged with fraud and violations of the Cybercrimes Act, with additional charges under consideration.
Subsequent raids in June 2024 resulted in the apprehension of another suspect in Kempton Park, accused of managing numerous pirate customers and resellers. This individual allegedly sold devices enabling unauthorized access to DStv content, including live channels, movies, and series.
In August 2024, a joint operation with the Milnerton South African Police Services led to the arrest of two individuals in Cape Town. These suspects were reportedly selling pirated streaming boxes that provided access to premium DStv content without authorization.
A notable operation in September 2024 targeted the Waka TV network in Germiston, Gauteng, resulting in the arrest of an individual allegedly involved in fraud, money laundering, theft, and Cybercrimes Act violations. This suspect was accused of facilitating unauthorized access to SuperSport content, directly impacting broadcasters like DStv.
By November 2024, MultiChoice’s anti-piracy initiatives had led to at least ten arrests over the year. These efforts underscore the company’s commitment to protecting its content and the broader entertainment industry from the threats posed by illegal streaming operations.
These concerted actions highlight MultiChoice’s dedication to safeguarding intellectual property and ensuring a secure entertainment experience for its legitimate viewers.
